Description

Of all the great designs that J/Boats has offered, the J/35 stands out as a performance IRC & PHRF winner – still to this day. The J35 was first introduced in 1983 and it is no exaggeration that new owners of varying experience and ability stepped aboard, raised the sails and began winning races. Her pure hull form, an easily driven shape free of rule-induced rating modifications that contributed to boats difficult to sail, moderate displacement and long waterline length and an uncomplicated rig produced a forgiving boat with responsiveness and great performance over a wide range of...

Captain's Notes

What jumps out with this J/35 is how honest the boat feels the moment you grab the tiller—light, direct, and perfectly balanced once she heels onto her chine. The cockpit is deep enough to be secure for family sailing, yet laid out so trimmers and helm can work without getting in each other’s way. Sightlines forward are excellent, making close-quarters maneuvering much less stressful. Down below, the long settees are genuinely comfortable off-watch berths, not just “race boat benches,” and the big forepeak is easy to convert from sail locker to private cabin. Ventilation is surprisingly good, and engine access through the removable companionway steps turns routine checks into a two-minute job instead of a full project.

Why J/35 in Minnesota

In local conditions where the breeze and sea state can change quickly over a single day, the J/35’s forgiving manners are a real advantage. She has enough displacement to punch through a chop without pounding the crew, yet accelerates fast in the lighter patches that often frustrate heavier designs. The simple, efficient rig keeps sailhandling under control when short-tacked daysails turn into gusty evening returns to the dock. For weekend cruising in the region, the combination of six true berths and a practical galley means you can comfortably stretch your range without stepping up to a much larger, costlier boat. On the racecourse, her proven all-around speed profile shines in the mixed fleets common here.
